Packaging Facility Expansion Project
CLIENT: Honeyville, Inc.
LOCATION: Ogden, Utah
FEE: $1 Million
PROJECT SCHEDULE: Two Years
Honeyville contracted PSE to help expand their Ogden facility. PSE was tasked with providing project management, scheduling, cost analysis, detailed engineering, purchasing and construction management for this greenfield expansion project. Tis project resulted in the doubling of Honeyville’s production output!
The execution of this project required an array of services from each discipline: mechanical, structural, civil and electrical (including controls/ automation). The process design included a heat treatment oven, storage, conveyors, blending and finishing equipment, a compressed air system, a nitrogen generator, and five new filling and packaging lines. Each packaging line was complex, including fillers, conveyors, sealers, cartoners, case erectors, metal detectors, check weighers and boxing stations. PSE provided design, selection and layout of the equipment for the entire process and facility.
One important factor that had to be considered for the automation design was the safety of the workers operating the packing lines. Some of the automation was designed solely to reduce the risk of injury, and in areas where it was necessary to place operators near machinery, special attention was given to the design of machine guarding, equipment locations, and access. The boxing and palletizing operations included a significant amount of manual labor, and as a result, our design team prepared a layout that would deliver product to areas that would reduce the amount of reaching, bending, and twisting required by workers.
