PSE was founded in the summer of 1991 by Merrill Shumway in his basement, with current president Brent Maxwell, and 2 other partners, beginning as a small team of electrical engineers. In the fall of that year, PSE moved into their first office in Salt Lake City, and began their controls and automation division. Over the next two years, PSE quickly doubled, then tripled in size, and began offering mechanical, civil, and structural engineering services. In 1996, PSE moved into a larger office space in order to handle the increasing growth and demand for their services.

As PSE grew as a company, so did the size of their projects. Over the past 30 years, PSE has become a full-service consulting engineering firm with projects across the United States as well as China, Indonesia, the Middle East, and Central and South America.  In 2009, PSE was recognized as one of the largest full-service consulting engineering firms founded in Utah, and to this day continues to provide support to the world’s largest mining, refining, food, commercial, and other light and heavy manufacturing companies.

PSE is currently headquartered in Sandy, Utah, providing engineering and field services. While our work is primarily in the western United States, we work throughout the country and internationally.  Our employees have a range of experience, some with 40+ years in the field, and have provided engineering services to both public and private sector clients, having completed projects valued at over a billion dollars of total installed costs.

Although each project has different needs, our preferred method of project delivery is Complete Owner’s Representative Engineering (CORE).  We are proud to represent our client’s goals, objectives, and best interests. Our project process is flexible, and we adjust it according to the needs of our clients. While not a traditional EPC approach, we take projects from inception to completion as an extension of client staff to ensure that project goals and objectives are met.
